Bread and pastries
|
Bakery is almost as old as humanity itself, as it is mentioned in every biblical text of the world. Originally the seeds were only toasted, ground, mixed with water and formed into circular flat cakes that were baked on hot stones or coal. The art of baking bread was brought from Egypt to Rome. Romans already baked bread in circular baking ovens. Bread was never only food. It was a precious gift for humanity as well as a holy symbol of well-being, fertility and happiness. People through history attributed it magical properties, not only at season changes, but at seasonal festivities and at important turning points in life as well. The preciousness of bread formed the faces of nations and people, their way of thinking and living. Historical, geographical, cultural and economical conditions of a nation are mirrored in their bread and in everything related to it.
